Operating your generator efficiently is the key to ensuring its longevity and avoiding unnecessary downtime. Standby generators can remain unused for long periods of time or are subject to monthly tests with no load or with loads lower than the minimum load acceptance (circa 50%) of the generator’s rating. Combustion temperature and pressure can be insufficient to effectively burn lubricating oil entering the combustion arena, creating the potential for carbonised injector nozzles, heavy carbon build up on valves and seats, fouled turbo charger and loss of cross hatching on the cylinder walls. To offset the effects of low loading, annual loadbank testing for a healthy duration is recommended as part of planned maintenance.
